Daniel Kötter, geboren 1975, ist ein Regisseur, Filmemacher und Videokünstler mit  besonderem Interesse an Mehrkanal-Video-Installationen und alternativen Konzert-Formaten.

 

Daniel Kötter übernimmt die Rolle des Regisseurs, Filmemachers, Forschers und Komponisten, um die Bedingungen der Möglichkeit des Kunstsystems, seiner Öffentlichkeit und seiner Akteure zu untersuchen. Es geht ihm um das Verständnis der Rolle von Bildern, Institutionen und der künstlerischen Praxis im allgemeinen. Seine Arbeit besteht in einer kontinuierlichen Untersuchung der Formen der Wahrnehmung sowie der Grenzen der je genre-spezifischen Erzähl- und Seh-Gewohnheiten in Theater, Kino und Museum.

 

Folgerichtig changieren seine Arbeiten zwischen verschiedenen medialen und institutionellen Kontexten und verbinden Techniken des strukturalistischen Experimentalfilms mit dokumentarischen und raumgestalterischen Ansätzen. Sie wurden auf zahlreichen internationalen Film- und Videokunstfestivals, in Galerien, Theatern und Konzerthäusern in Europa, USA, Kanada, Mexiko und Nigeria gezeigt. Seine filmischen Hauptwerke sind die Super8-Trilogie camera movement and location (2006-09) sowie die Mehrkanal-Trilogie Arbeit und Freizeit (2009-2011)

 

Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Zusammenarbeit mit Komponisten und Choreographen. Für Galerien und Tanz-Performances, entwickelte er Multi-Channel-Live-Video-Delay-Installationen. Zwischen 2002 und 2008 entwickelte er als künstlerischer Leiter des labor für musik:theater zahlreiche abendfüllende Performance-Projekte und Multi-Channel-Filme an der Grenze zwischen Konzert und Musiktheater.

 

Seit 2009 arbeitet er intensiv mit dem Komponisten Hannes Seidl zusammen, so bei den Musiktheater-Performances Falsche Freizeit (sophiensaele Berlin), Freizeitspektakel (Musikbiennale Venedig) oder dem prämierten Experimentalfilm Film für übers Sofa.

Seit 2009 entwickelt er gemeinsam mit Constanze Fischbeck das modulare Film-/Kunst- und Performance-Projekt state-theatre über die Bedingungen des Performativen  in den Städten Lagos, Teheran, Berlin, Detroit, Beirut, Mönchengladbach (Mousonturm Frankfurt, Rautenstrauch Joest Museum Köln, Akademie der Künste Berlin).

 

 

 

Daniel Kötter, born 1975, is a director and video artist with a particular interest in multi-channel video installations and alternative concert formats. 

 

Daniel Kötter takes on the role of director, filmmaker, researcher or composer to relate to the issues of the art system in the public sphere, to what is the network of actors which activate the understanding and role of images, institutions and artistic practice. His structural approach in filmmaking and photography broadens the understanding of documentary and it is a constant investigation of modes of perception through which the public can explore the limitations of genre-specific habits of narration in theatre, cinema and museum.

 

Daniel Kötter's work oscillates deliberately between different media and institutional contexts, combining techniques of structuralist film with documentary elements and experimental music theater. It was shown in numerous galleries, video festivals, concert halls and theatres all over Europe, in New York, Mexico and Lagos.

Between 2008 and 2011, he developed the video- and opera-performance trilogy Arbeit und Freizeit.

His music theatre performances in collaboration with composer Hannes Seidl are shown at international festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Musica d’hoy Madrid and others.

Kötter's new series of installations, films, and discursive work on urban and socio-political conditions of performativity has been under development since mid-2010 under the title state-theatre: Lagos/Teheran/Berlin/Detroit/Beirut/Mönchengladbach (with Constanze Fischbeck).

For galleries and dance performances, he developed multi-channel live video delay installations.

His award-winning short-Film Film für übers Sofa (with Hannes Seidl) was shown at festivals worldwide.

Between 2002 and 2008 Daniel Kötter, as artistic director of the labor für musik:theater, developed and produced numerous feature-length performative projects and multi-channel movies on the borderline between concert and musical theater.

 

Daniel Kötter has been living and working in Berlin since 1996.
